Using a technique called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), researchers safely shut down certain groups of neurones in the brains of volunteers.

The article and scientists don't really drive home the insight of that sentence. The way they turn faithful people with a healthy skepticism of immigration into atheists who see no problem from mass migration, is by shutting off the part of the brain that is involved in detecting a threat. This is understandable considering the brains of the scientists and journalists may be similarly damaged.
